Shaare Sedek Synagogue

IMG_4022.JPG

A new synagogue with meeting rooms, office and catering facilities, together with residential accommodation on the site of a former farm and house within a Conservation Area in South Manchester.

The new building is a home for an existing Orthodox congregation relocating from an inner city site and includes a gallery for ladies’ seating. A gently curving roof is decorated in gold and silver leaf with symbols of the Twelve Tribes of Israel and the Aron has a surround of picked Jerusalem Stone. A pair of windows was brought from the former site and incorporated into the east elevation.

A social hall adjacent to the main space can be opened up via movable screens to create a single large space for major festivals and to gardens at the rear.

Liturgical fittings including a menorah, water cut from solid aluminium, were purpose-designed by the practice. Work is ongoing on additional stained glass, fittings and embellishments.
